The Book that Started the DVD The Secret
How many of you have actually read the book The Science of Getting Rich by Wallace D. Wattles? We read and studied it several years ago and now we still find that Wallace is right on in what he presents.
In Chapter 1 Wallace addresses The Right to be Rich. We live in a town where, for many people, money is not a priority but freedom, spirituality, and sometimes even lack of responsibility is the priority. In response to this attitude, Wattles says that it's not possible for a person to live a really successful nor a complete life unless he or she is rich. And he means money; it's not a figurative term. That's a pretty in your face statement, and I happen to agree with him.
The Object of Life is Personal Development
Wattles believes that everyone has the inalienable right to develop as much as possible, the object of life is personal development. This includes physical, mental and spiritual areas. You have the perfect right to live as fully as possible.
But here is the catch. If you really want to develop yourself to a high degree physically, you will need to spend time, effort, and resources to do it. If you want to become well educated in a subject, you also need to spend time, effort and resources to do it. And spiritual development, if you want to have the leisure or the mentors to guide you in your growth, needs resources, too. What resources are those? Usually money.
A friend of ours has just left for China to spend 4 months studying in a Shaolin temple. His comment was, "I didn't know how expensive it would be!" He has already figured in his room and board, his air fare, but he neglected to count his car insurance, storage of his stuff, cell phone or internet access to friends and business back home. And he was fortunate enough to be able to take 4 months away from what he does for a living.
Money Isn't Everything
Wallace Wattles and I are not saying that money is everything. What we are saying is that it makes everything more easily accomplished. If you aren't totally exhausted from working long hours just to make ends meet, you will be more able to enjoy the leisure time you have for other pursuits. If you can afford the time for study, travel, and reading you'll be better able to develop yourself intellectually. And, every mother who has been pushed to her limits time-wise knows that it's easier to show love and devote time and attention when you aren't totally frazzled. Money isn't everything, and by itself it doesn't create happiness.
What money does do is allow you the possibility to do other things. It opens more opportunities and choices for you no matter whether you want to develop your mind, your body or your soul.
